A girl is wearing a pair of flat shoes . She weighs 550N . The area of contact of one shoe with the ground is 160cm² . What pressure will be exrted by the girl on the ground:
(i) If she stands on two feet?
(ii) If she stands on one foot?

The girl weighs is F = 550 N
The area of contact of one shoe with the ground is A =160 cm2 = 0.16 m2
begin mathsize 14px style Pressure equals Force over Area end style
(i) If the girl stands on two feet:
Therefore, Area, A=0.16 m2 = 0.16 m2 x 2 = 0.32 m2
begin mathsize 14px style Pressure equals Force over Area equals fraction numerator 550 space straight N over denominator 0.32 space straight m squared end fraction equals 1718.75 space straight N divided by straight m squared end style

(ii) If the girl stands on one foot:
begin mathsize 14px style Pressure equals Force over Area equals fraction numerator 550 space straight N over denominator 0.16 space straight m squared end fraction equals 3437.5 space straight N divided by straight m squared end style

We say that pressure is defined as the amount of force exerted on an unit area and if the area is decreased, pressure increases For example an iron nail would be applying more pressure than any other thing let's say 100 N per m square but the question is an iron nail doesn't cover an area of m square so why do we say 100 N per m square
