A bullet of mass 40 gram moving with a velocity of 900 km per hour strikes a wooden target and comes to rest after penetrating 50 cm calculate loss in kinetic energy and average force of friction

bullet speed = 900 km/hr = 900×(5/18) = 250 m/s
Retardation a produced by wooden target is calculated using the formula " v2 = u2 - 2×a×S " with final speed v = 0.
u is initial speed and S is the stopping distance.
a = u2/(2×S) = (250×250)/(2×50×10-2) = 62500 m/s2
force = mass × retardation = 40×10-3 × 62500 = 2500 N
loss of kinetic energy = (1/2)×m×u2 = (1/2)×40×10-3×250×250 = 1250 J
