A boy of mass 25kg is standing on a stationary boat of mass 75kg. If the boy walks along the length of the boat at a speed of 1ms-1 with respect to the boat, find the velocity of the boat with respect to water. (Neglect friction from water on the boat)

Centre of Mass does not move, because no external force is acting. Hence velocity of centre of mass is zero.

let v be the velocity of boat

25×1 + 75×v = 0  or v = -1/3 m/s

boat will move with speed 1/3 m/s in opposite direction of boy's movement
