A boy holding a plane mirror walks in reverse direction with speed of 0.5 m/s. He is able to see the image of scooter in the mirror which is standing at rest behind him. What is the speed at which the image of scooter approaches the boy?

Let v m/s be the speed of scooter .
Distance between scooter and boy at a time t is given as
S = Xo - [ ( v + 0.5 ) × t ) m
where Xo is the distance between scooter and boy at t = 0
Image distance behind the plane mirror S' = S = Xo - [ ( v + 0.5 ) × t ) m
speed of image , dS'/dt = - (v +0.5 ) m/s
Hence speed of the image approaching the boy = ( v + 0.5 ) m/s
