ICSE Class 10 Answered
1)WHICH PROPERTY OF H2SO4 ACCOUNTS FOR ITS USE AS A DRYING AGENT?
2)CONCENTRATED H2SO4 IS BOTH AN OXIDISING AGENT AND A NON VOLATILE ACID. WRITE 1 EQUATION TO ILLUSTRATE THE ABOVE MENTIONED PROPERTIES OF H2SO4

1) H2SO4 is used as dehydrating agent.
H2SO4 has a great affinity for water. It readily removes elements of water from other compounds.
2)
(a) Conc. H2SO4 as an oxidising agent:
The oxidising property of concentrated sulphuric acid due to the fact that on thermal decomposition, it yields nascent oxygen [O].
H2SO4 → H2O + SO2 +[O]
Nascent oxygen oxidises metals, non-metals and inorganic compounds.
a. Non-metals
C + 2H2SO4 → CO2 + 2H2O +2SO2
S + 2H2SO4 → 2H2O +3SO2
b. Metals
Cu + 2H2SO4 → CuSO4 + 2H2O +SO2
Zn + 2H2SO4 → ZnSO4 + 2H2O +SO2
c. Inorganic compounds
2HBr + H2SO4 →Br2 + 2H2O + SO2
H2S + H2SO4 → S + 2H2O + SO2
(b) Non-volatile nature
It has a high boiling point, so it is used to prepare volatile acids such as HCl, HNO3 and acetic acid from their salts by double decomposition.
NaCl + H2SO4 →NaHSO4 + HCl
NaNO3 + H2SO4 →NaHSO4 + HNO3
CH3COONa + H2SO4 →NaHSO4 + CH3COOH
