Expert Answer
vibrating instruments produce many frequencies f1, f2, f3.... etc., if we arrange them in ascending order f1<f2<f3..., then f1 is called fundamental and other frequencies are called overtones. It will be pleasant if the overtones are harmonics of fundamental, it means overtone frequencies are integral multiples of fundamental frequency. The harmonics that an vibrating instrument produces give its richness and diversity of tone. The harmonics are critical to the beauty of sound. Hence the notes of same loudness and pitch that are produced by two identical guitars played by two persons will differ in quality due to the harmonics produced by those two guitars
