why is bombay known as the city of dreams?

The first generation of Bombay filmmakers, especially writers and actors, came from the erstwhile British provinces of Punjab, Bengal and Madras. After independence, it was these migrants who coloured the image o0f Bombay as a city of dreams - one where riches and squalor existed in equal measure. Through the years, it is this romanticised image of Bombay that has persisted in the Urdu-Hindi film industry of Mumbai, wherein the struggler migrant just has to work hard to achieve his potential.
