Why HNO3 makes wool yellow??
Asked by lovemaan5500 | 27 Jan, 2020, 06:43: PM
answered-by-expert Expert Answer
Proteins and amino acids that contain phenyl rings form a yellow colored compound when treated with concentrated nitric acid. The yellow stains on the wool fibres are caused due to the reaction of nitric acid with protein keratin present in the wool fibres. This reaction is called xanthoproteic reaction.
