Why chances of variations are more in meiosis than mitosis?

Chances of variation are more in meiosis than mitosis because of the following reasons:
- The maternal and paternal chromosomes get mixed up during meiosis I.
- Synapsis occurs between two homologous chromosomes and genetic exchange takes place between maternal and paternal chromosomes which results in genetic recombination.
