  • An antigen is any substance to which the immune system can respond.
  • The membrane of each red blood cell contains millions of antigens.
  • Blood group antigen proteins serve a variety of functions within the cell membrane of red blood cells.
  • They help in transporting other proteins and molecules into and out of the cell, maintain cell structure by attaching to other cells and molecules, and participate in chemical reactions.
