Why a flying bird appears higher in the sky compared to its actual height ?

The flying birds seem to be higher in the sky than they actually are due to temperature gradient. 
As the light rays from a bird pass through the different layers of air they suffer refraction. So the ligt rays bends towards the normal at each layer. Due to continuous refraction, the light from the bird appears to come from a point which is actually higher than its actual position.
