Whats the reason that nano-particles show drastically different properties as compared to their bulks?

It is because in bulk materials, we chose the potential well of the atoms in which the electrons are bound to be three dimensional, where as in nanoparticles, we have the choice to consider it as one dimension (quantum dots), two dimensional (quantum wires) or therr dimensionals (thin layers) and it changs the whole properties.
