What is the electric field flux through the base of a cube from a point charge infinitesimally close to a vertex?

Expert Answer
Fig.(a) shows a cube holding charge q at its vertex. It is required to get the electric flux passing through base (shaded area).
Let us surround the charge q with similar cubes on all sides as shown in fig.(b). Now we have symmetric surface area with respect
to the charge.
Total surface area of enclosed surface = 24a2 , if a is side of cube in fig.(a)
Hence by Gauss law, electric flx through the entire surface is given by, E × 24a2 = q / εo ................(1)
where E is uniform electric field. From eqn.(1), we get, E = (1/24) q / ( εo a2) ....................(2)
Electric flux passing through base of the cube (shaded area) in fig.(1) = E a2 = (1/24) ( q / εo )
