The given figure shows an apparatus which is used to demonstrate the process of respiration. (1) What do the following parts in the diagram represent?     (a) Balloons     (b) Rubber sheet      (c) Bell jar (2) What will happen to the balloons when the rubber sheet is pulled down? (3) What is the role of diaphragm during breathing? (4) Which breathing movement is indicated when the rubber sheet is pulled down?

(1) (a) Balloons: Lungs; (b) Rubber sheet: Diaphragm; (c) Bell jar: Ribcage

(2) When the rubber sheet is pulled down, the balloons will inflate.

(3) Diaphragm contracts and relaxes thereby, decreasing and increasing the volume of thoracic cavity for expiration and inspiration respectively.

(4) The pulling of rubber sheet indicates inspiration.
