Figure-1 shows the given arrangements of plates and the plates are marked as 1,2....5,6.
Let us consider plate-2 is given some positive potential with respect to plate-5 .
Figure-2 shows the network of capacitors as per the plates arrangement given in figure-1.
(plate indices are marked in each capacitor shown in figure-2). In the network of capacitors given in figure-2,
points X and Y have same potential due to symmetry.
Hence there will not be any charge on plates of capacitors connected between X and Y and this capacitor can be removed
in the network as shown in figure 3.
In figure-3, we see, in each branch, two capacitors of same capacitance C are connected in series
that can be replaced by an equivalent capacitance of C/2 as shown in figure-4.
Hence as shown in figure-4, two capacitors of capacitance C/2 are connected in parallel acorss the terminals a and b .
Hence the equivalenet capacitance as shown in fig.5 is C.
Hence the net capacitance of the arrangements of plates shown in figure-1 is ( ε0 A / d )
