Let p' be the momentum of particle-A after collision .
Loss of momentum of particle-A equals impact given by particle-B
Hence, J = p - p' , i.e., momentum of particle-A after collision p'= p-J
By conservation of momentum, particle-B has momentum J after collision
(total momentum after collision , p-J + J = p = total momentum before collision )
Coefficient of restitution e is defined as
e = ( velocity of separation along line of impact) / (velocity of approach along line of impact) = (v2 - v1 ) / ( u1- u2)
where v1 and v2 are respective velocities of particle-B before and after collision .
For particle-A, u1 and u2 are respective velocities before and after collision.
since momentum divided by mass is velocity and particles are identical velocities are proportional to momentum.
Hence coefficient of restitution e is given by
