Mean free path λ is given by ,
where d is moleculer diameter, n is number density of molecules.
Above definition of mean free path is independent of direction.
we can not make any constrain to gas molecules to move only along x-axis or to move only in x-y plane
Hence either along x-axis or in x-y plane , mean free path is as defined above
