Given below are two graphs that show the volume of air in the lungs of a boy, before the race and during the race. (a) How many breaths/min does the boy take before the race? (b) How many breaths/min does the boy take during the race? (c) Why does the breathing rate change before and during the race?

(a) The boy takes 3 breaths/min before the race.

(b) The boy takes 15 breaths/min during the race.

(c) During any kind of physical exercise (race in this case), the body needs more oxygen. That is why, the breathing rate increases to meet the increasing energy demands of the body.
