Does giving a dominion status is similar to independence.if not how do they differ

No, dominion status is not similar to complete independence. 
In case of India, the Dominion status meant that the Indian governemnt would be free to manage its own internal affairs but it will have to accept the British soverignity in managing its foreign policy. 
Complete independence means that a country is soverign. It means its government has complete authority to regulate and manage its internal and external affairs.
