The equivalent resistance is aggregate of resistances connected either in series or parallel combination. 
When R1, R2, R3 ....Rn are resistances connected in series then 
Equivalent resistance is given by, 
Rs = R1+R2
When R1, R2, R3 ....Rn resistances are connected in parallel the, 
Equivalent resistance is given by,
1 over R subscript P space equals space 1 over R subscript 1 plus 1 over R subscript 2 plus space 1 over R subscript 3 space... space 1 over R subscript n
