Expert Answer
we have lens equation (1/v) - (1/u) = 1/f .............(1)
where u is lens-to-object distance, v is lens-to-image distance and f is focal length
if near point is 50 cm, then u = -25 cm and v = -50 cm. Hence 1/f = -(1/50) + (1/25) = 1/50
hence focal length = 50 cm = 0.5m , lens of power for reading = 1/0.5 = +2 D
if far point is 3 m, then u = ∞, v = -3 m, hence 1/f = -(1/3) or f = -3m .
Hence power of the lens for viewing = -1/3 = -0.33 D
