Equation for Radioactive decay   N = N0 e-λt ..................(1)
 
where N is the number of non-decayed atoms present at time t, N0 is number of atoms present when t = 0 and λ decay constant.
 
if 90% of substance is disintegrated in 4 years, then we have   from eqn.(1)   ln(0.1) = -λ 4   ......................(2)
 
if 99.9 % of substance is disintegrated in t years, then we have from eqn.(1)   ln(0.001) = -λ t  ......................(3)
 
by dividing eqn.(3) with eqn.(2),   we get  t = ( 4×ln(0.001) )/ln(0.1) = 12 years
