In the anterior position i.e upside down, baby fits snugly into the curve of the pelvis. The pelvis is formed by the hip bones and it holds all the reproductive organs, the bowel and the bladder. As the buttock area is greater, a more comfortable position is for the buttock area to be at the top of the uterus and the head to be towards the pelvis.
As the buttock area is greater, a more comfortable position is for the buttock area to be at the top (“fundus”) of the uterus and the head to be towards the pelvis. - See more at: http://www.obstetricexcellence.com.au/questions-answers/baby-turning-head-down/#sthash.3SK3qsYe.dpuf
So it is easy for the baby to move down gently during labour.

The foetus will not be affected unless having uterine shape abnormality, or unusual shape of pelvis, the baby may not turn upside down and will be in breech position i.e  baby who is not in a head down.
If you have an abnormality of the uterus such as a fibroid protruding into your uterine cavity or you have a uterine shape abnormality, or you have an unusual shape to your pelvis then your baby can be prevented for adopting a head down position. If you have twins often one is not head down and sometimes both. - See more at: http://www.obstetricexcellence.com.au/questions-answers/baby-turning-head-down/#sthash.3SK3qsYe.dpuf
