When the bob of pendulam is displaced by angular position θ,
there is no movement of the bob in the direction parallel to string.
Hence net force acting on the bob along the direction of string is zero .
The force mg which is due to the weight of bob of pendulam is resolved along the direction of string as mg cosθ .
Another force acting on the bob in the direction of string is Tension force T.
Tension force T and resolved force component ( mgcosθ ) are in opposite direction.
Hence , T - ( mg cosθ ) = 0 or T = mgcosθ
