The electronic arrangement of carbon(At. no. 6) is 2,4.
This indicates carbon needed 4 electrons to complete its octet.
But if carbon can gain 4 electrons then the Carbon atom will become unstable, the same case happens if it loses 4 electrons.
Hence in order to accomplish stability and to complete its octet, carbon shares its four electrons which 4 hydrogen atom each.
