The various reasons health service is called ‘public’ are
- The government, in order to fulfil its commitment of providing healthcare to all citizens, has established hospitals and healthcare centres.
- The resources that are required to run these services are obtained from the public in the form of taxes that are paid to the government.
- The services are meant for everyone.
- Also, one of the most important aspects of the public health system is that it is meant to provide quality healthcare services either free or at a low cost.
- Even the poor can seek treatment.
- The important function of the public health system is to take action to prevent the spread of diseases such as tuberculosis, malaria, jaundice, cholera, diarrhoea, chikungunya etc.
