Why do we know more about medieval period than ancient period?

We know more about the medieval period as compared to ancient period in India because there are more credible written records that exists for the medieval period.
We do have written records belonging to the ancient period but most of them are mythology based and hence their credibility always remains questionable.
Another reason is that many written ancient records have not survived and hence we have a little knowledge about the ancient Indian History. Most of the knowledge that we have has been built based on archeological records unearthed during the excavations.
