- Giuseppe Mazzini was a revolutionary in the 19th century Europe who later became a member of the secret society of the Carbonari. He actively supported the unification of the Italian states. To further spead his revolutionary ideas, he formed a secret society called ‘Young Italy’ and 'Young Europe'.
- He believed that the God had created the nations to be the natural units of mankind. Hence, Itlay cannot remain divided into various kingdoms. It had to a single unified republic.
- Following his vision, secret societies were set up in Germany, France, Switzerland and Poland.
- Mazzini's opposition to monarchy and his vision of democratic republic scared the conservatves. Matternich described him as 'the most dangerous enemy of our social order'.
