Expert Answer
- A sporophyte is the diploid multicellular stage in the life cycle of a plant or alga. It develops from the zygote produced when a haploid egg cell is fertilized by a haploid sperm.
- In bryophytes as well as pteridophytes, the multicellular sporophyte is produced from the zygote.
- The male sex organ is called antheridium. It produces biflagellate antherozoids or male gametes.
