Which property of non-metals is employed in protecting some highly reactive non-metals which quickly react in air?

Non-metal like Phosphorus is very reactive. It immediately catches fire when exposed to air. To prevent this, it is stored in water. This quality of non-metals of not undergoing reaction with water is quite helpful in protecting some highly reactive non-metals which quickly react in air.
