Phenols on treatment with chloroform in the presence of KOH, a –CHO group is introduced at the ortho position of the benzene ring. The substituted benzal chloride formed as intermediate on hydrolysis with alkali produces salicylaldehyde. This reaction is known as the Reimer-Tiemann  Reaction.
