when is the displacement of a moving body negative?

The sign of displacement depends on the sign convention we have used.
Suppose we are considering the motion in a straight line and u are standing at origin. The points in front of you is taken as positive side and the points behind u is taken as negative. It is like a number line.
Suppose you move three meter ahead. Your initial position was 0 and final position is 3 thus the displacement is positive (3-0).
Now you move 1 meter behind, now the displacemnt would be (2-3 = -1) a negative quantity.
Thus it depends on your point of reference.
