The revolutionaries in Europe overthrew monarchies in several countries. They replaced the royal symbol with the national symbol. For example, a new French flag, the tricolour, replaced the former royal standard.
Revolutionaries in Europe composed new hymns , took oath and honoured the martyrs who died fighting for the country.
Nation were portrayed as female figures. The female figures became the allegory of the nation. These were considered as the symbol of national unity. Germania became the allegory of Germany while Marianne was the allegory of France.
