- Napoleon introduced the Civil Code of 1804, also known as the NapoleonicCode. This Code instituted the principle of equality of all people beforethe law, right to property was established and all privileges enjoyed by the people of high birth and class were abolished.
- Peasants, artisans, workers and businessmen enjoyed this newly found freedom.
- They realized that Uniform laws and standardized weights would be more helpful in a trade as it would facilitate the movement and exchange of goods and capital from one region to another.
- However, Napoleon increased taxes on the people, enfored censorship and orced conscription into the French armies.
- So, the initial enthusiasm of the locals soon turned to hostility, as it became clear that the new administrative arrangements did not go hand in hand with political freedom.
