What majoritarian policies were adopted by the Buddhist Sinhala political leadership in Sri Lanka?

In the year 1956, the democratically elected Sinhalese majority government passed an Act that was seen as discriminatory by the Tamil speaking population. The Act sought to make Sinhala the only official language of the state, thus disregarding Tamil. The government also pursued preferential policies towards the Sinhalese in university appointments and government recruitment. A new Constitution was also developed that recognised the State as responsible for the protection and spread of Buddhism.
