The ethnic fabric of Sri Lanka is quite arbitrary. It has a clear majority community in the Sinhala speakers who amount to about 74% of the population. There are also Tamil speakers who are about 18% of the population. Tamils are divided into two groups - the ‘Sri Lankan Tamils’ who are the Tamil natives of the country. They constitute about 13% among the Tamil speakers. The rest are ‘Indian Tamils’ who migrated from India as plantation workers during the British colonial period.
