The compounds containing ionic bonds are called ionic compounds. These are formed by the transfer of electrons from metal to non-metal.
For example- Formation of MgCl2 from Mg and Cl2.
Properties of ionic compounds-
1. Hard solids and their constituent units are ions
2. Non volatile with high melting and boiling points.
3.They do not conduct electicity in solid state but conduct in molten or aquous state
4.They are soluble in water and insoluble in organic solvents.
5.They react fast in their aquous solutions
