Actual Mass

1. It is a relative number and has no unit.

1. The unit is grams.

2. It indicates the number of times an atom of an element is heavier than 1/12th part of a C12 isotope.

For example,

Atomic mass of oxygen is 16 means an atom of oxygen is 16 times heavier than 1/12th of C12.

2. It indicates the actual mass of an atom of the element.

For example, Mass of an oxygen atom is,

16 × 1/ (6.023×1023)

= 2.656×10−23 grams
