The Silk Route, also known as 'Silk Road' in the ancient period was a network of trade routes that existed across the eastern and western parts of India. Many commodities such as gold, silver, precious stones, wool, cotton and carpets were also traded on this route. Since, silk was the main commodity that was traded on this route, it came to be known as the 'Silk Route'.

The Route also proved to be a highway of rich cultural exchange between different communities in the sub continent.
