Expert Answer
- Lysosomes help in keeping the cell clean.
- If the cell gets damaged, then one of the lysosomes bursts, releasing digestive enzymes.
- The released enzymes then digest their own cell and ultimately the cell dies.
- Lysosomes destroy any foreign material such as bacteria or virus which enter the cell.
- Lysosomes also remove the worn out and poorly working cellular organelles by digesting them to make way for their new replacements.
- Since they remove cell debris, they are also known as scavengers of the cell or cellular housekeepers or demolition squads.
