Expert Answer:
A membrane-bound compartment or structure in a cell that performs a special function is called a cell organelle.
Some of the major cell organelles along with their functions are listed below.
Cell organelles
Function
Nucleus
- Regulates cell functions
- Contains chromosomes, made of genes, which control hereditary characteristics
Mitochondria
- Produces ATP which acts as energy currency for the cell
Endoplasmic reticulum
- Folding of proteins
- Transport of synthesised proteins
Golgi apparatus
- Modification and export of proteins
Vacuoles
- Store water and other substances, food, pigments and waste products
- Provides turgidity to the cells
Lysosomes
- Digest and remove wastes from the cell
Ribosomes
- Synthesise proteins
Plastids (only in plant cells)
- Site for manufacture and storage of important chemical compounds used by the cell
