Expert Answer
Let a transverse wave travels in x-axis direction .
Let y (x, t) denote the transverse displacement of the element at position x at time t.
As the wave sweeps through succeeding elements of the medium, the elements oscillate
parallel to the y-axis.
At any time t, the displacement y of the element located at position x is given by
y (x, t ) = A sin (kx – ωt + φ ) ................................(1)
where A is amplitude which is maximum displacement from equilibrium position.
Bracketted term ( k x - ω t + φ ) is called phase of the wave .
k is called wave vector . If λ is wavelength then k = 2π/λ .
ω = 2πf is angular frquency and f is frequency of wave.
φ is initial phase , i.e phase at t = 0 .
Functions, such as that given in Eqn.(1) represent a transverse wave travelling
along the positive direction of the x-axis. On the other hand a function,
along the positive direction of the x-axis. On the other hand a function,
y(x, t) = a sin (kx + ωt + φ )
represents a wave travelling in the negative direction of x-axis
