Dear Student,

Let the atomic masses of X and Y be “x” and “y”.

Given, 0.1mole of XY2 weighs 10 g

So, x +2y = 10/0.1 = 100…….(1)

0.05 mole of X3Y2 weighs 9g

3x + 2y = 9/0.05 = 180 g…….(2)

From (1),

X = 100 – 2y ……….(3)

Substitute the value of ‘x’ from (3) in (2).

3(100−2y) + 2y = 180 g

300 – 6y + 2y = 180 g

y = 30 g

Therefore, x = 100 – 2(30) = 40

Thus, x = 40 g and y = 30 g

Atomic mass of X is 40 g/mol and atomic mass of Y is 30 g/mol.
