Genus is a taxon which consists of a group of related species which share similar characters. o All the species of a genus are derived from a common ancestor.
Example: Panthera leo (lion), Ailurus fulgen (red panda).
Species is a group of individuals which resemble each other in all morphological characteristics. Organisms of one species are capable of interbreeding and producing fertile offspring. All individuals of one species irrespective of their geographical region are derived from a common ancestor. There is anatomical similarity. All individuals of the same species have the same karyotype, i.e. chromosomes are of the same size, shape and number.
