Let l be length and b be breadth of rectangle.

Perimeter of rectangle = 2 ( l + b )= 240 cm

l + b = 120 cm  .............................................. (1)

if length decreased by 10% , then changed length = 0.9 l

if breadth increased by 20% , then changed breadth = 1.2 b

new perimeter = 2 ( 0.9 l + 1.2 b ) = 240 cm

( 0.9 l + 1.2 b ) = 120 cm

9l + 12 b = 1200  ......................................(2)

let us eliminate l using eqn.(1) and rewrite above equation as

9( 120 - b ) + 12 b = 1200

1080 + 3b = 1200

3b = 120  or b = 40 cm

from eqn.(1) , we get l+40 = 120 ;  hence l = 80 cm

Length of rectangle = 80 cm

Breadth of rectangle = 40 cm
