To find the value of k if the equation 4x2 + 2hxy + +y2 + 6x + ky - 10 = 0 represents a pair of parallelo lines.
Solution:
The equation ax2 + 2hxy + by2 + 2gx + 2fy + c = 0 represents a pair of parallel lines if
h2 = ab and af2 = bg2
So, the equation 4x2 + 2hxy +y2 + 6x + ky - 10 = 0 represents a pair of parallel lines if
h2 = 4 x 1 and 4(k/2)2 = 1(3)2
h = 2, -2 and k = 3, -3
