- Through cross-breeding, it is possible to combine the desirable traits of two different breeds and the progeny can be used for commercial production.
- However, if crossbreeding is not possible, inbreeding can be carried out.
- Closely related individuals within the same breed can be mated for 4-6 generations.
- The progeny obtained from such matings can be evaluated and superior males and females can be identified for further mating.
- Several breeds have been developed by this method. One such example is the Hisardale breed of sheep developed in Punjab by crossing Bikaneri ewes and Marino rams.
