Expert Answer
if the particle moves with speed v = at in a circular path, tangential acceleration is given by,
dv/dt =a ...............(1)
v = ds/dt = a × t or ds = a × t dt
Hence we get distance travelled in time t as , ....................(2)
but we are given that the distance travelled in time t is (1/8)th of circumference of circle.
Hence, s = (1/2) a t2 = (1/8) ( 2 π R ) = (1/4)π R .....................(3)
where R is radius of circular path
By equating (2) and (3) , we get time taken to travel (1/8)th of circumference
(1/2) a t2 = (1/4)π R or t = [ π R / (2a) ]1/2
Radial acceleration = v2 / R = a2 t2 / R = ( a π / 2 ) .....................(4)
From eqn.(1) and eqn.(4), we get, total acceleration = [ a2 + ( a π / 2 )2 ]1/2 = (a/2) [ π2 + 4 ]1/2
