If T is mean life of radioactive element, then we have , T = 1/λ   or   λ = 1/T .................(1)

where λ is decay constant of radioactive element

If A1 is the activity at time t1 , then we have, A1 = λ N1 = λ No exp ( -λ t1)  .....................(2)

If A2 is the activity at time t2 , then we have, A2 = λ N2 = λ No exp ( -λ t2)  .....................(3)

where N1 and N2 are number of undecayed atoms at time t1 and t2 respectively

By dividing eqn.(3) using eqn.(2), we get,  ( A2 / A1 ) = exp[ -λ (t2 - t1 ) ]

Hence, we get, A2 = A1 exp [ -(t2 - t1)/T ]
