I believe you are referring to Direct and indirect speech.

A sentence is said to be in the direct speech when it quotes the direct words of the speaker.

Eg: Nanny said to me, "You will get two extra cookies today as you have been a good boy."

A sentence is said to be in the indirect speech when it reports what has been said by someone else.

Eg: Nanny said to me that I would get two extra cookies that day as I had been a good boy.
